Things mentioned in this podcast episode:

Are you looking to DIY your product photography? I am sharing my top 5 do’s and don’ts when taking product photography. This is helpful if you are trying to take the pictures yourself at home or to help you know what to expect if you are outsourcing your photography for the first time.

Do’s and Don’ts of Product Photography:

  • Do branch out and use more than a white background. My favorite place to go for backgrounds is Stile and Co. They have a wide range of backgrounds that are great for any type of photo and they are easy to clean and store.
  • Don’t leave your images unedited. Even if you are just using your phone to take your pictures there are still ways that you can edit your photos. The lightroom app with some presets is a great place to start!
  • Do collect props that fit your brand aesthetic. This will allow you to switch things up and still stay on brand. This can be as easy as picking something up from Target that fits your brand.
  • Don’t aimlessly pull random things from your home. This will show in your images. Especially if it is something that is used like shoes or make-up.
  • Do look for clay and hand made items. Clay is very trendy right now so look for these types of things on etsy or even your local goodwill or antique store.
  • Don’t forget to play with your lighting. This could be playing with how the sun hits your window and blinds or by adding dramatic lighting or shadows. This is a great place to start with more education in your DIY photography journey.
  • Do incorporate pops of color. But only if it fits your brand. It doesn’t have to be bright or crazy. It can be a subtle pop of color that you use on your website as an accent color.
  • Don’t stray from your branding. This leaves your business looking busy, lacking direction and zero consistency. So when you are looking for props and other ways to add color don’t stray from your branding.
  • Do refresh your images periodically. Don’t keep your images in a constant loop. You have to devote time to create new images and content in order to keep everything up to date and fresh.
  • Don’t underestimate the power of professional photography. Even if it is just one shoot to give you new and fresh content to allow you to have a consistent brand appearance take the jump and outsource it.

Developing New Ideas for Product Photos

Developing New Ideas for Product Photos

Developing New Ideas for Product Photos

Welcome to the Crystal Clear Podcast where we strive to empower the everyday creative boss to elevate and grow a business that matches your creativity and passion for creating products.

Things mentioned in this podcast episode:

As a creative director, I share my secrets on gathering inspiration for photos and using it to create something unique that will attract your ideal customer. This week I share my top 3 tips on creating unique product photos that will help your ideal customers stop their scroll and absorb what you are promoting.

Tips for Developing New Ideas for Product Photos:

  • Source Inspiration – Gather different pieces of things that you like and create something that is unique to you and your product. Look for the different ways people are using a product similar to yours, check the backgrounds they are using, the textures, and the lighting. Instagram, Pinterest, Google, and even magazines are all good places to go when looking for inspiration.
  • Get Specific with Color, Unique Details, or Specific products – Search on Pinterest for your brand colors and see what is popping up. Look up ideas by your industry and then by unique details that make your product stand out. Maybe that is how it is made, a specific ingredient or the way you package it.
  • Organize your inspiration ideas and centralize them in one place or folder – This could be done on a folder in your photos, a Pinterest board, or even an app like Collect to organize all of your photos and screenshots of inspiration.

After sourcing all of your inspiration it is time to sit down and pull out all the things that don’t fit. Once you pull out the things that don’t fit you can start to narrow ideas down and combine ideas to create something unique to you and your brand. When you are evaluating all of the bits of inspiration be very honest with yourself on what you do and don’t like about the images. Looking at the lighting, the shadows, the placement of different things in the images, and the colors. All of this will help you to create something unique to yourself.

If all of that overwhelms you then reach out to me and let’s talk about the ways I can help you as a creative director.

Launching a New Product? Here's 3 Types of Photos You Need!

Welcome to the Crystal Clear Podcast where we strive to empower the everyday creative boss to elevate and grow a business that matches your creativity and passion for creating products.

Things mentioned in this podcast episode:

Launching a business is tough but taking your business from in-store to online with a small audience can be even tougher. Where do you start, how do you market but most importantly what images would you need to get going? On today’s episode I dove in to 3 types of images that you want to consider for your product if you’re planning to launch anything new here in 2021!

Continued…

Here are the 3 types of photos your product business needs:

Catalog On White Background

This serves a double purpose: Not only do they create a clean look on your storefront, but they also are becoming a requirement for almost all wholesalers (even companies like Amazon). Depending on where you plan to aim your initial marketing efforts these images are key to starting your business.

Lifestyle with Models

These styles of photos have taken off this year. Having a model is a must have to take your business to new heights and to compete in what has become a HUGE market (thanks to Covid). Lifestyle Models provide the opportunity to reflect the diversity in your business. In addition to this, models allow for the chance to tie emotion to your ads that help your ICA connect to the transformation your product provides.

Texture & Ingredients

This is my FAV! Another amazing trend from the last 6 months has been detailing the product texture and product  ingredients. With more and more brands leaning on organic and natural ingredients they want to show it off too. Embellishing on the texture helps connect the “feeling” factor to the product; presenting the ingredients as things they can recognize establishes trust in the product.

Fight off the overwhelm with direction! A Creative Director, like myself, focuses on helping map out your photoshoot to achieve your desired images, brand recognition and most importantly impact on your ideal client. Ready to invest in product photography? Let’s chat! I offer, in fact, I insist on a free consult call to discuss your brand, what images you may need and design photoshoot options that works best for your business.

3 Components of a High-End Brand

3 Components of a High-End Brand

Many small business owners that I work with really want to channel a high-end appeal.

T

hey want to put their best foot forward, and they are looking to do that through their visuals. Photography adds that high-end, tailor-made feel to your products if you do it right. So, here are three important components that you need to have for your high-end brands.

Quality and Luxury Appeal

First, you need quality and luxury appeal. That means having the best kind of props, the best kind of materials, the thought, and detail that go into every image. Instead of creating an image with ingredients that are brought together digitally, you invest in having a luxury appeal by using real fruits that you can cut up and put with your product. Sometimes the quality and luxury aren’t about the props, but rather the details that go into it. Think about the pieces that make your product unique.

Solid Differentiator

The second component is a solid differentiator. Think to yourself – what are the things that you are coming back to? Do you keep coming back to this minimalist, clean style? Do you keep coming back to that bohemian type vibe? Do you lean hard into blacks and whites and accent details? What are the things you find yourself leaning hard into, and that you love to see for your brand? What do you think your ideal customer is going to resonate with? You have a similar style and trend in the way that your brand is showing up.

Natural Products

I’ve also noticed many brands are leaning more into natural products or products made of real ingredients that you can get at a store. Take skincare products, for example. Many brands want to show that they use natural ingredients. So, what do they do? They style their product photos using fresh fruits to help bring their product’s story to life. You give your audience a better visual of what you bring to the table and make your product more appealing.

Conclusion

Once you decide your differentiator, choose what style and direction will fit you and your brand best. That specific “thing” that makes your product different from the rest needs to be in your detailed shots. It needs to be in the clothes that your model is wearing. It needs to be in everything. So that look, that feeling, that lifestyle translates 100% into everything that you’re doing. When you’re marketing and putting things out there, you are pulling in more and more of the ideal clients you want to have to buy your things.

If you want to reevaluate your offer or go back to some of the necessary steps because your company is brand new, then let’s talk. The Creative Boss Society is where I’m teaching other creatives how to use methods that I have applied in my brand and business to grow. I will help you get straight to the strategy that is working for you. Let me know if you have any questions. I’d love to help! You can also find me on Instagram. 3 Things to Have on Hand for Your Product Photos

Doesn’t it make you feel better when you know you’re prepared for any possible outcome?

N

ot only does this make our lives easier in case unexpected problems come up but it saves us time trying to search for the things we need during the most precious moments in our business.

So, if you’re currently taking on the role of the photographer in your business, here are 3 things to have on hand for your product photos. These are the key things we find most important and likely always needed, even if you don’t know it.

Steamer

This is a must for all things fabric. You can use a steamer for several different things including a backdrop, clothing products, pillows, basically anything that can wrinkle. Steamers are an essential tool that I have on hand at the studio. It’s also great for any models bringing in clothing that may need to be quickly prepped. A steamer takes up little storage space and can get the job done quicker than ironing would. You can check out the one I use here.

Sticky Tack

My second go-to at the studio is sticky tack. This is magical and the best thing to have for those round shaped jars, products, and props that tend to run off while we are shooting. It’s a quick, easy, and cheap solution to styling angles, fun layouts, or anything that appears impossible to achieve.

If you’re not sure what sticky tack is, it’s a piece of removable, sticky substance that you can attach on your products or props to help keep them in unique poses or on uneven surfaces. The trick is to use just enough to hold your product in place, but not too much where you catch it on camera. Here’s my favorite sticky tack to use!

Acrylic Cubes

Last and most important for flat lays – Acrylic Cubes! These are magical little pieces that add some extra depth to your flat lay photos. You can use them individually to lift props when styling shots or stack them on top of each other to add some extra height. Acrylic cubes are great for getting creative and prove best for displaying and raising products to the right level. With various sizes, you can easily hide certain parts of your image or use it to outright style your photos. This is the set I use in my studio.

Conclusion

You never know when you’ll need to add something a little extra to your shot, so having these 3 things nearby can truly help. If you have any questions or simply need ongoing monthly support, I’d love to connect. We can schedule a consultation call to identify the best options for you. You can also find me on Instagram!
