Vertical Images: The Product Photoshoot Must-Have!
Did you get some vertical images in your last product photoshoot?
A
s I’ve developed my client photoshoot questionnaire over the years, I’ve found that so many business owners consistently forget about vertical images.
So if you didn’t get some vertical shots in your last batch of product photos, I want to tell you why you should definitely think about putting them on the list for next time.
Take a minute to think about the social platforms you’re working on building up for your business. Is Tik Tok, Pinterest, or Instagram on the list? If so, vertical images will make your life easier. On Tik Tok, a vertical image can go right into your video. Pins on Pinterest are vertical. And Instagram Stories and IGTV are also designed to use those upright photos and graphics. Because so many people absorb most of their social media content from their phones, these platforms are gearing their content for those small phone screens with vertical orientations.
For me personally, I try to snap pictures of all set ups during a shoot both horizontally and vertically so that my customers are getting exactly what they need to market their products effectively. Often, horizontal images that are cropped for a vertical graphic don’t have the components laid out perfectly for that orientation, so it’s worth it to take a few minutes during a shoot to rearrange and get a portrait image that looks just right. Vertical images are just as easy to crop into squares as horizontal images for your Instagram posts. And clients also find that sometimes a vertical image is exactly what’s needed for a certain area on their website.
Additionally, I want to bring your attention to the importance of having a variety of vertical images for your Pinterest account. Pinterest has recently changed their algorithm to prioritize new and unique images and pins over items that have been used multiple times. The days of being able to repost with the same images over and over are gone, which makes marketing on Pinterest a little bit trickier and increases the need for business owners to have a good library of vertical photos to choose from.
So if you’re sitting there as you read this wishing you had gotten vertical images in your last product shoot, don’t stress. You can resize and crop your horizontal images for now. But to up your social media marketing game, make sure to ask your photographer for vertical photos the next time around.
And if you’re a business owner who is really putting an effort into your social media and marketing and needs a lot of original images for that, let’s talk! I have a monthly retainer package that would allow us to deep dive into your brand specifically and focus on having unique content for your individual posting rhythms and marketing needs. With this package, I’m able to offer you not only a discount on your photoshoots but also on other services like stop motion videos and added illustrations to well round your brand and marketing. I can only accept a limited number of clients into this monthly retainer program, so if you’d like one of the two available spots I currently have, I’d love to help you!
