What is Flat lay Photography?!
Going back to the basics. Just when you think everyone might know everything, you realize you don’t. So let me take you back to the basics of product photography with what IS flat lay photography.
Flat lay or Flatlay these photos are the most popular style of stock and product images. So what exactly is it and how do you use it?
This is going to be one of the shortest blogs I write because it really is simple but something that we should go over. So here it goes!
A flat lay is an image or photograph taken directly overhead of your setup, props and/or product. You are, in most cases, looking directly down and over everything to capture this type of image. It has become the most common and now widely known forms of photography for the creative and marketing industries. You can almost always find a flat lay of some sort in a persons social media feed.
So what is the big deal you might ask? Well, its simple when you shoot a flat lay you’re giving your audience an opportunity to see the full set up, product and display in a nice neat and ideal one-deminsional image. Think about it, when you look at something from the side you might miss details or find things overlapping or unclear. With a flat lay you get to control more of your detail and setup. You can put an item or product in place to be the main focal point while keeping everything else within view, making it clean, clear and easy to identify.
Need a visual example? Check out this clothing flat lay below! There are several other flat lay images all throughout my site. So where to go from here…
